Google Faces Criticism for Alleged Censorship of Trump Assassination Attempt in Autocomplete Feature

Google Faces Criticism for Alleged Censorship of Trump Assassination Attempt in Autocomplete Feature

Google is under fire for allegedly censoring search results related to the assassination attempt on 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

By yourNEWS Media Newsroom

Google faced significant backlash on Sunday for allegedly censoring information related to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump from its search engine’s autocomplete feature. Users reported that typing “assassination attempt on Tru…” did not suggest “assassination attempt on Trump” but instead recommended “assassination attempt on Truman,” as highlighted in a video posted on X by Libs Of TikTok.

The video showed other autocomplete results included phrases like “… Trump’s case,” “… Trump’s administration,” and “How many presidents have had assassination attempts.” This apparent omission sparked outrage and calls for accountability.

Libs Of TikTok criticized Google, writing, “Google needs to be hauled in front of Congress to answer for this. Orwellian.”

Even if you type out the entire word no results autofill on Google @Google.

We’re witnessing the erasure of history in real time.

Republican Kansas Senator Roger Marshall announced plans for an official inquiry into Google’s search practices. Sharing his own search results screenshots, Marshall accused Google of “suppressing” information about the assassination attempt on Trump. “Why is Google suppressing the search about the Trump assassination attempt? These are all screenshots from this morning. Has there been a dramatic increase in Truman biographers in the last two weeks?” Marshall questioned. “I’ll be making an official inquiry into Google this week – I look forward to their response.”

Other notable figures, including Republican Texas Representative Chip Roy and Donald Trump Jr., echoed these concerns. Roy confirmed the search discrepancy, stating, “Can verify.” Trump Jr. accused Big Tech of interfering in the election to favor Kamala Harris, stating, “Big Tech is trying to interfere in the election AGAIN to help Kamala Harris. We all know this is intentional election interference from Google. Truly despicable.”

A Google spokesperson responded to these allegations, denying any manual intervention in the autocomplete feature. “There was no manual action taken on these predictions. Our systems have protections against Autocomplete predictions associated with political violence, which were working as intended prior to this horrific event occurring. We’re working on improvements to ensure our systems are more up to date. Of course, Autocomplete is just a tool to help people save time, and they can still search for anything they want to. Following this terrible act, people turned to Google to find high-quality information– we connected them with helpful results, and will continue to do so,” the spokesperson stated.

The controversy comes after Trump was grazed by a bullet during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. The incident, which left the former president with a minor ear injury, has stirred significant political and public concern.
