BAGHDAD – Early on Friday morning, the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad was struck by two series of rocket attacks. According to an embassy spokesperson, the incident did not result in any casualties.

The spokesperson indicated that the attacks are suspected to have been orchestrated by militias in Iraq aligned with Iran. As of now, no specific group has claimed responsibility for the assault.

This incident marks the first reported rocket attack on the embassy since mid-October, when a coalition of Shi’ite Muslim militias, known to be aligned with Iran and collectively operating under the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, began targeting U.S. forces stationed in Iraq and Syria.

These armed factions have justified over 70 similar attacks, citing the United States’ support for Israel during the recent conflict in Gaza as the primary motivator.

In response to the attack, the U.S. Embassy called upon the Iraqi Government to increase efforts in protecting diplomatic and Coalition partner personnel and facilities. This plea has been a consistent stance of the embassy following several such incidents.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has directed the nation’s security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the attack. In a statement from his office, al-Sudani condemned these actions as the work of “unruly, lawless groups” that do not represent the Iraqi people’s will. He emphasized that such acts, which destabilize Iraq and target protected areas, are tantamount to terrorism.

The attacks, which occurred around 4 a.m., were followed by sirens and calls for cover, as captured in social media videos from the scene in central Baghdad.

The United States maintains a troop presence of approximately 2,500 personnel in Iraq. Their mission is primarily to provide advice and assistance to local forces, aiming to prevent a resurgence of the Islamic State, which had previously captured significant territories in both Iraq and Syria.

Reaffirming the right to self-defense, the embassy spokesperson stressed the commitment to protecting American personnel globally.

The United Nations mission in Iraq has also condemned the attack, expressing concern over the potential for Iraq to be drawn into a broader conflict. The UN emphasized the importance of maintaining the country’s stability and safeguarding the progress made thus far.
