The U.S. military is mobilizing more than 4,000 sailors and Marines to assemble off Israel’s coast.
According to an article from The Washington Post, the United States is sending an amphibious task force, comprising thousands of U.S. sailors and Marines, to Israel. Their positioning aboard warships is seen as a preparatory measure in the event the ongoing conflict with Hamas escalates.
Defense officials, who requested anonymity to disclose anticipated military maneuvers, revealed on Monday that the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, with its more than 4,000 personnel, will supplement the existing American naval presence off Israel’s coast. This presence will soon encompass two aircraft carriers, along with their respective escort ships.
The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which operates out of Camp Lejeune, N.C., is integrated with the amphibious task force. This unit is equipped to execute a broad range of missions, some of which are special operations. As of Monday, the USS Bataan and the USS Carter Hall—two ships that ferry personnel for the unit—were located in the Gulf of Oman. Both had departed from Kuwait following Hamas’s unprecedented cross-border assault on Israel on Oct. 7.
Another vessel associated with this unit, the USS Mesa Verde, was navigating the Mediterranean Sea, with plans to approach the vicinity of the Israeli coastline, as relayed by defense officials.
It should be noted that the aforementioned figure of 4,000 encompasses the 2,000 troops, as reported by CNN and other outlets, that were merely put on alert for potential deployment.
