Livestock buyers came through in a big way for the county’s young ranchers at Thursday’s Junior Livestock Sale and Auction, lifting the final total past last year’s by more than $10,000.
When the last bid was received by Tucker Kail of Kail Auctions in Puryear, this year’s sale total sat at $417,381 — a few thousand shy of last year’s total of $425,038.
But even though the auction was over, the bidders weren’t done. A lengthy list of ‘bumps’ — additions to either the price per pound or the final price submitted during and after the auction — added $19,585, raising the final unofficial total to $436,966.
A total 117 animals were auctioned off this year, compared to last year’s total of 99.
Of that, there were 18 goats bringing in $22,596; 44 steers, which brought in $290,804; 36 hogs, $99,215.50; and 19 lambs, $24,351.
The 89-pound grand champion goat owned by Caden Delaney received a bid of $25 a pound from Beasley Investments, for a total of $2,225 — the highest price paid for a lamb.
The highest price paid for a steer $10,200 for the 1,275-pound steer of Emma Grace Dotson. It received a bid of $7 per pound from Farm Bureau Insurance, with an additional $1 per pound added by Gregson Farms.
The highest-priced hog was the 276-pound hog of Brayden Tosh, which had a final price of $5,796. It brought a bid of $21 per pound from Tosh Pork.
Charlotte Schultz’ 109-pound grand champion brought the highest price paid for a lamb. Beasley Investments bid $25 a pound, for a final price of $2,725.
BRING ON THE BUMPS
Bumps raised the goat sales total by $658. The price of Garrett Perkins' Bred and Born Grand Champion goat was raised $400 by Ag Tech Service. The overall reserve champion goat of Charlie Collins was raised $3 from $18 to $21 by Ferguson F. Farmer.
Bid supplements raised the steer sales total by $14,205 — essentially the cost of two additional steers.
Ag Tech Service raised the final price of the steers shown by Dallas Bomar, Kaleb Norwood, Ella Hutson and Curtis Bomar by $100. C&C Logging raised the steer of Bayleigh Thompson by $7 a pound, and Conner Thompson's steer by $1 a pound.
Henry County Farm Bureau raised the steers of Max Burns, Jude Hendrix by $0.75 a pound; those shown by Emerson Vick, Madden Allison, Gavin Parrish and Jack Hendricks by $0.50 a pound, and Carter Allison's steer by $0.25 a pound. Josh Simmons Insurance raised the price of Curtis Bomar's steer by $1.25 a pound.
Bearing and Supply raised the steer of Lilly Cloar by $1 a pound, while K & J Meat Processing raised the steers of Laine Whipple, Lilly Cloar, Max Burns and Jude Hendricks by $3.50 a pound each.
Hillview Farm added $200 to the final price of Mykaila Tayloe's steer.
In hogs, bumps raised the final total by $633. The hogs of Maci Smith, Maci James, Wesley Smith and Parker James were increased by $100 by Ag Tech Service. Meanwhile, Parker James' hog was raised $1 per pound by Tammy Stoop, and the hogs of Cavan Daniels and Dixie Bennett were raised to $8 per pound by by K & J meat processing.
Lamb prices were increased by $4,089, beginning with an increase to $10 per pound for every animal below that price. Siblings Melinda and Murray Perkins and Morgan Chilcutt raised their initial bid of $10 a pound for Stefani Gooch's lamb to $12 a pound. Dank Farms boosted the price per pound of Wyatt Jackson's lamb by $1, while Ag Tech Service raised the final price by $100.
