North Korea Claims Successful Launch of Spy Satellite with Photos of U.S. Bases in Guam

North Korea reports the launch of its first military spy satellite, allegedly capturing images of U.S. military bases in Guam, as confirmed by Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un.

North Korea has announced the successful deployment of its first military spy satellite, claiming it has captured clear images of United States Armed Forces bases in Guam. Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly reviewed these images. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), North Korea’s state-owned media outlet, reported Kim’s examination of the photos shortly after the country declared the satellite’s successful launch.

Kim Jong Un visited the satellite control center in Pyongyang following the launch, where he allegedly viewed satellite images of Andersen Air Force Base in the village of Yigo in northeastern Guam, as well as Naval Base Guam in Western Guam. KCNA also claims that Kim viewed photos of other significant U.S. military bases in the region, though no images from the satellite have been released publicly.

Named the “Malligyong-1,” the satellite was reportedly launched from North Korea’s west coast on the evening of November 21. According to KCNA, the device is undergoing final adjustments and is scheduled to commence its reconnaissance mission on December 1.

The United States, Japan, and South Korea, closely monitoring the launch, have not confirmed the satellite’s deployment or operational status. South Korea has indicated a willingness to believe that Pyongyang’s latest attempt to orbit a satellite has been successful, pending further analysis to ascertain its functionality.

Kim’s Ambitions for More Spy Satellites:

This launch, if verified, marks North Korea’s first successful placement of a satellite into orbit. Previously, the regime acknowledged the failure of two attempts earlier this year due to engine issues shortly after launch.

Following this apparent success, Kim Jong Un expressed ambitions to launch additional spy satellites on varied orbits to enhance monitoring of military activities by the United States and its allies, which he claims are escalating regional military tensions.

In response to North Korea’s actions, the U.S. and its allies have condemned the launch as a provocative act violating United Nations Security Council resolutions. As a military countermeasure, U.S. forces, including an aircraft carrier and a nuclear-powered submarine, have been redeployed to South Korean ports.

In retaliation, South Korea announced the resumption of reconnaissance flights along the border with North Korea and partially suspended the 2018 Comprehensive Military Agreement with Pyongyang, aimed at reducing border tensions.
