In a bold cultural declaration, President Donald Trump announced Sunday that Columbus Day will be fully reinstated with its traditional dates, rules, and public celebrations, vowing to reverse what he described as years of “woke” assaults on American history.

Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump criticized Democrats for their efforts to undermine the legacy of explorer Christopher Columbus and the longstanding recognition of his voyages in American life.

“I’m bringing Columbus Day back from the ashes,” Trump wrote. “The Democrats did everything possible to destroy Christopher Columbus, his reputation, and all of the Italians that love him so much. They tore down his Statues, and put up nothing but ‘WOKE,’ or even worse, nothing at all! Well, you’ll be happy to know, Christopher is going to make a major comeback. I am hereby reinstating Columbus Day under the same rules, dates, and locations, as it has had for all of the many decades before!”

Trump’s announcement comes after years of controversy surrounding the holiday, as many progressive-led cities and states moved to replace Columbus Day with “Indigenous Peoples’ Day.” Supporters of the change accused Columbus of historical crimes against Native populations, while critics of the shift argue it amounts to erasing the nation’s history and denigrating European contributions to the founding of the Americas.

In his remarks, Trump positioned the restoration of Columbus Day as a broader stand against what he called the “self-loathing liberal movement” seeking to rewrite America’s past.

“Christopher is going to make a major comeback,” Trump declared.

The former president also pointed to the wider cultural and political stakes of preserving traditional holidays, criticizing Vice President Kamala Harris for past comments accusing early European explorers of spreading “devastation, violence, and disease” to the New World.

Trump’s move to officially reinstate Columbus Day is expected to involve restoring federal recognition of the holiday, encouraging public commemorations, and supporting the rebuilding or safeguarding of statues and monuments dedicated to Columbus that were removed in recent years.

The announcement reflects Trump’s ongoing campaign emphasis on fighting “woke ideology” and defending American heritage—a strategy that continues to resonate with many voters as he campaigns for a return to the White House.
